Report for Practicum
About Kan Sokly
Originally,
Miss. Kan Sokly is a boastful but friendly woman in the class. Despite, she
could conduct a good greeting to her students as she was teaching then. Why is
this message coming out? Have you observed her seriously while she was
teaching? At 1:48-2:13 PM on 10th Saturday, August 2013, she
conducted a teaching practicum for the second round of listening skill focused
at that time. Her major is English Literature for Education in Teaching of
Phnom Penh International University. She studies in Room 406 and she also has
to practice her teaching in that class based on the lecturer has assigned to do
that. Her focused topic is “Friendship among men vs. friendship among
women”.
For the first step, she
wrote date at the left-top corner of the whiteboard. After writing “Friendship
among men vs. friendship among women” on the whiteboard, she explained
the lesson’s aim to the students. She wrote seven new words on the whiteboard
aiming at ensuring them to understand some meaning from listening. After
writing, she asked, “What’s difference between friendship and relationship?”
One student—Mr. Pel Bunna stood up to show his ideas. She reacted to his ideas
that it was right and furthered explained from his ideas. Moreover, she
explained the definitions of the seven new words by gesturing and using her
marker to draw, circle, point, and underline which word she emphasized, whereas
most of them were making noises. Immediately, she drew their attentions. She
tried her best to explain them with loud voice using to control them. Then she
could reach it.
For
the second step, she drew a diagram about “Friendship among men and women” on
the whiteboard. She then asked her students to express their ideas. She got
them to write the whiteboard, but they did not act out any response because
they did not understand. She straightaway explained them with good attention.
They did not seem to understand. Suddenly, again a student—Mr. Bunna
understood, stood up and told her. She was very happy to write what he answered
on the whiteboard. She furthered explained with his ideas again to the rest. So,
they understood and provided some more answers. She wrote on the whiteboard a
lot. She was so proud since they could do a good job, but she spent a long time
in this process of stage.
For
the third step, she told the students to be ready for listening. And then she
clicked on the play button of her cute laptop’s screen. “Let’s listen,” she
said. After listening for the first time, she explained the meaning from the
speaker. They listened to her and compared what they also heard from the tape.
Next, when she gave them papers to work in pair—two students got only one task
paper. She said, “Now listen again to complete the gaps with words or phrases
you hear”. She played the recorder again then. Whilst listening, the ring
exclaimed a quick sound to interrupt her teaching. She felt normal because she
noted that her students were listening with good attention paying. So, she did
not want to bother them. She did a good job in this process. She then knew it
was time but she rushed to write answers on the white board with her playing
again. When reached the answer, she paused it. And then she wrote it for them.
She, immediately, after rushed writing the answers on the whiteboard, finished
her teaching without giving homework to her students. It was not good for her
since she did not meet right teaching.
Totally,
Miss. Kan Sokly could not produce a good time management in her teaching. She took
long time to explain her students when they did not get what the lesson’s aim
focused on. She did not give them example(s)
first. So, it was hard to understand somehow. However, she tried very hard to
raise lots of ways in explanation without any examples on the whiteboard. At
least, she could do it then as a student could catch up what she wanted them to
do. She will be a good teacher if she is well-organized in her next teaching.
