Report for Practicum
About Pel Bunna
To
respond to university’s requirement, students have to follow up remedial disciplines
and policies. So, the English literature students have to perform their
teaching practicum. Mr. Pel Bunna is one of the students majoring in English
Literature for Education in Teaching in Room 406 of Phnom Penh International
University. He conducted a teaching practicum in the class at 10:11-10:36 AM on
13th Saturday, July 2013. It was his second round of teaching
performance. His teaching responsibility was listening skill—one of the four
main skills in English study. The focused topic is “The Best Things in Life are
Free”. Generally, Bunna is a quiet and strict man but he, at that
time—during practicing his teaching in the class—was funny since he showed a
warming greeting to his students from start to end. He would be deserved
appreciation.
Firstly, he said, “Hello” in a nice
way to the students and asked, “How are you?”. The students were happy to
answer his question and seemed to enjoy his teaching at starting point. He
talked to them with joyful face, which made them cooperative in the class.
Next, he checked attendances by asking class monitor that, “Who are absent
today?” “Mr. Bunna is absent today”, said class monitor and most of the
students in the class also said in chorus. He smiled to reply and exclaimed,
“Really? Oh, oh I know. Thank you very much.” Then he went on.
Secondly, being happy, he told the
whole class to look at the pictures in the paper. “What can you see in the
pictures?” he said. “Click on one picture to describe why you are interested
in”. The students agreed to say something about a particular image which they
thought it was nice and attractive. After listening to two students described
the two interesting pictures from the paper, he was very delighted and
appreciated them as well. Then he ordered by telling them to listen to five people talking about the
best things in their lives that are free so that they could put the photos in
the order they would hear from speakers. They listened intentionally to the recorder
and he controlled the class by walking in front of them with eyes on them and
his ears on tape playing. After listening, he asked them which photo was the
first speaker said—he asked each photo referred to which speaker. After
providing answers through listening to the tape by the students, he checked the
answer as the whole class. Some students were happy because their answers were
correct, whereas others were not so enjoyable since theirs were not fitted to
the photos. He said to them happily as he saw they cooperated well. He thanked
to them.
Thirdly, he further told the students to
look at the table below the photos. Here they were required to listen to the
speakers again. He emphasized them to note down any right messages from the
speakers to fill in the table’s gaps. After listening, he asked them to tell
the answers. While listening to answers and talking to them with smiling, the
bell rang to interrupt that it was time to quit his teaching. Then he managed to
finish it without checking answers for them. But he set a piece of homework for
them to work individually as each one chooses a favorite free thing to talk
about and identify the reasons why he or she likes it. He said, “Thank you” to his
students and then uttered to finish his teaching, “Goodbye see you tomorrow!”
To
sum up, Mr. Bunna performed his teaching interestingly and productively but he
could not manage his time well. It was his careless mistake in teaching. On the
other hand, he will be a good teacher because he could draw students’
attentions to him in a class. It is not an easy job to do in teaching process.
His teaching was simple but his activities in the class showed that he paid
strong attention to his students as the whole class. In the future, he will be
a very good teacher if he tries to limit his time for teaching to follow up his
time set in the lesson plan since a teacher is required to teach through the
lesson plan to reach the lesson objectives and deliver the students productive
tips. However, he did a good job then. Thus, it is not a tough task for him to
be a good teacher.
