DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN CAMBODIA

Domestic violence often occurs upon women and children in Cambodia. During the last twenty years, domestic violence has been acknowledged as a rapidly growing health concern; as a result, several organizations in Cambodia are working to develop strategies to stop violence, and provide more protective mechanisms for women and children much better and better. There are three main kinds of domestic violence that is remarkably concerned: physical abuse, emotional abuse and economic abuse.

For the first concerning, physical abuse usually occurs from the ignorance of most Cambodian people; especially, who don’t have enough opportunities to go to school or study any specializations and get the lessons of lives; likewise, those have never entered training in the life experience. Therefore, when they get married, they don’t exactly know how to behave to become a good husband or wife. That’s why it has effected on their behaviors and attitudes spontaneously. For instance, while the argument happening, they always never keep energy at all. They use both physical strength and emotional anger, or other apparatuses to eliminate such the trouble without any negotiations. Besides, they don’t need to go to courts for finding any solutions since those people cannot dominate their feelings in looking for ways to solve or make decisions. Therefore, they only realize about trying all the best to be against for winning the other’s sides individually. This can affect extremely badly to their emotions and bodies; they want to be the lords of overcoming the provocation. In other words, ignorance means unemployed which make their standard of living is low. So​ the low cost of living and uneducated people can quickly become aggressive, uncontrollable and unreasonable person. In addition, ignorance is the big obstacle for people to get the information about social’s progressing. For example, the gender broadcast, which tries to make equality in social between men and women, plays very important role to educate the ignorant people; still, they don’t care about it as it is not easy to get understanding. This unknowing repels them into unavailable situation of practicing their performances. That ignorance is very affluent to people again and again. For instance, I used to see in my eyes, the husband was backing home after work. At that time, he felt very exhausted and hungry, but his wife had not yet prepared meal for him, so he burst into anger and hit his wife very badly. Had the neighbors not dissuaded him, he would have killed his wife. The next day that husband was taken out to the police station for warning. If he did like that one more time, he would be imprisoned. Manifestly, we can see and hear such worse the activity through the newspapers, or the morning news broadcast. We found that violence in Cambodia has happened nearly every day because of some main factors that are the result from the drug use and other causes.

The second dealing concern, emotional abuse, is the main factor of cause that leads people to commit violence. It is hung from drug using that can affect too much to people who use it. It pulls people to fall into the hellish pit. There are some kinds of drugs such as heroin, marijuana, opium, or wine. These make users feel wracking-nervous, hot-tempered, angry, and uncontrollable when they take them. Most of drug users often have a difference or conflict and fight each other. They do not think who is right and who is wrong, but they are always right themselves ever. In a family, the poor one, between husband and wife, if the husband is a drug user, he always drinks wine, and gets drunk all day in daily transactions; this occasionally leads him to make trouble to the family. He provokes his wife and children till scolding, and hitting them badly. Sometimes, he could kill them accidentally. On the other hand, when he is drunk, he often has an excuse to accuse his wife of having an affair, or not respecting him like a husband; in contrast, he does not come into his wife’s feeling if she is resentful. Moreover, the bad talk from others, especially bad buddies, who usually drink alcohol together, tell him about the badly awkward performance of his wife acted to them. For instance, they tell him that they saw his wife had chatted with the unknown man, or she was very selfish to them. Consequently, he would be jealous and full of anger within the drunken situation, and that could inspire him to quarrel and hit his wife. As a matter of fact, the drunken people do not know anything, they know but they pretend at all, because they could have an excuse to prevent themselves from any charges or blaming. I had seen some activity correlated to the domestic violence as well. For example, four years ago, in my village, I saw a just-married couple had arguments almost every day. The husband did not go out and do anything for food, but drinking alcohol all day. Such the activities cede the ugliness, unhappiness, disorder, and disagreement to the families, society, and whole nation. When the husband and wife cannot live in harmony, they have the differences and want to separate their ways. By this point, some of them do not ponder about their children’s future. So when they divorce, their children become parentless or orphans. For example, there are many parentless children who have no asylums, enough food, and warm caring. Hence, it can be seen in the present that most of them must live up and on their own; some become scavengers, and others are street beggars.   

The last factor of related concern refers to the economic abuse. The property is the crucial asset for each family. If one loses it in any way, he or she will be terribly sorry. It is not an easy thing to earn, so they have to maintain it at all. Partly, in the Cambodian society has showed all kinds of forms over the domestic violence. Among those factors, there appear some available ones that are the pre-causes of destroying the family’s asset. As the above description has been done, all the activities are the spots of expressing the cons or disadvantages that walk the people to the way of wasting their time and money. When they lose everything they own, their families will become poor, and then poorness can lead them to commit some violence.  The violence is frequently caused by a husband more than a wife; for example, as the husband does not earn sufficient cash to support the family and the wife also seems to blame him for unable to make enough money, and then he feels irate with it and tends to lead to the violence in the family. Besides, a family has three or more children, most of whom need clothes, money to go to school or university, and so forth. All of these issues result in the fight among the members in the family, in particular, between the couple.

         To avoid such a dramatic act of violence, you had better not utilize drugs. In turn, you should learn about the disadvantages, unimportance and harsh influence of drug using because drugs cannot give you the bright life, but guides you to go into the hellish way. Drugs can spoil your future, family, and whole society. Moreover, all Cambodian people should think about the difficulties of drug affect. They should unite altogether to help promote the anti-drug programs so that they can reduce the drug using in Cambodia little by little. Finally, the police officers and government should have some hard measures to crackdown the illegal import of addicted drugs. The more drugs are imported, the more people tend to use them. So, do not let it be in Cambodia as it is the poor country, and the big amounts of people are not well educated. They are easily hoaxed by these drugs. The fundamental perceptions enable them to prevent from the physical, emotional, and economic abuses are educations. When the education is well performed, the level of poverty would get to declination. Therefore, the government needs to promote more and more the standard of education to help people easier to figure out the impact of ignorance.

            In conclusion, in the reality, the domestic violence in Cambodia has often taken place almost in everywhere in Cambodia because of ignorance, drug usages, and poverty. Cambodian people can easily not avoid those pre-causes that have pushed them into the bad situations of committing the physical, emotional, economic abuses during the last twenty years. So each family dealing with above mentions is quite hard to get off these hellish affluent concerns. As a consequence of Cambodia is developing, the violent activities still have been seen in Cambodian society today.
